What is a window opening limiter?

A window opening limiter is a device that restricts the opening of a window to a certain distance, generally less than 4 inches. It is designed to prevent damage to windows during strong winds and to comply with safety standards.

The implementation of the new regulatory requirements regarding residential pool safety in Québec, initially scheduled for the end of September 2025, has been postponed by at least one year by Minister Guilbault.

ACCESS CONTROL / POOL SAFETY
Pools must be surrounded by an enclosure (fence) that complies with regulations in order to restrict access.

WALL FORMING PART OF AN ENCLOSURE / WINDOW
A window located 3 m (10 ft) or more above the ground on the inside of the enclosure is permitted. A window located less than 3 m (10 ft) above the ground is also permitted if its maximum opening does not allow the passage of a spherical object more than 10 cm (4 in) in diameter.

To this end, it is possible to install a window opening limiter, provided that residential pool regulations allow it.

*DOOR
To be compliant, a door forming part of the enclosure must meet the regulation. It should therefore close and lock automatically.
At the present time, the wide variety of doors, patio doors, and formats does not allow us to confirm the existence of a reliable mechanism. Consequently, there is currently no clear solution available on the market.

WHY ADD A WINDOW OPENING LIMITER ?
With the new regulation from the Quebec Government, many homeowners with an in-ground or above-ground pool in their yard are asking questions. The Residential Pool Safety Regulation guide will provide clear answers on this matter.

These devices are already used by homeowners to help protect children when windows located on upper floors are less than 3 meters from the ground. By ensuring the opening does not exceed 4 inches, it prevents a child from slipping through.

Casement window opening limiter
These devices can be installed on casement windows for residential use only. They are designed to restrict the window opening to 4 inches. Specifically made for casement windows in PVC or Hybrid, they are installed outside the insect screen.

Window opening limiter for hung and sliding windows
For hung and sliding windows, the restriction mechanism is different. It consists of a window stop block, also called a security bar, which restricts the window opening to 4 inches, whether for single or double sliding or hung windows. Made in Canada from high-quality white PVC, these stop blocks are compatible with PVC or Hybrid windows. They are installed during the manufacturing process of the window and intended for residential use only.

TWO MODELS
Security bars are installed horizontally for sliding windows and vertically for hung windows. Their length varies depending on the size of the window on which they are installed.
