Adequate maintenance will help you ensure that your windows last for 5 to 10 years, so it’s well worth the trouble! Here are a few tips to help you conserve them as long as possible.
PVC window frames
PVC window frames are easy to maintain. To keep them looking like new as long as possible, just clean them with a little mild soap and water, rinse thoroughly, and wipe with a soft cloth. You should never use an abrasive product, as it can wear away the PVC surface. If your PVC window frames are stained, a mixture of soap, water and washing soda will provide a deeper cleaning action. In the case of stubborn stains, use a “magic eraser” sponge, rinse thoroughly, and dry with a soft cloth.
Wood window frames
These days, most wood window frames are covered with extruded aluminum on the outdoor side, which minimizes the maintenance they need in comparison with frames that are wood on the inside and the outside. These products make it possible to enjoy the warmth and charm of wood inside without the maintenance hassles outside. Inside the home, the wood is sheltered from the elements, so no special maintenance is required. For wood windows with an all-wood frame, a coat of protective stain has proven effective at protecting the wood against the ravages of nature. However, maintenance is still recommended every 3 to 5 years.
Aluminum window frames
Aluminum window frames only require a little bit of maintenance. At Portes et Fenêtres Verdun, we recommend cleaning them with mild soap and water about once a year. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth, and you’re done!
